The Mystery of the Assumption Encloses a Synthesis of All the Greatness of Our Lady.
Newsroom (08/16/2025 7:59 PM, Gaudium Press) – “At your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir” (Ps 44:10). Thus sings the psalmist, inviting us to contemplate the One who, assumed into Heaven, delighted the Eternal King with her beauty.
The immeasurable greatness of Our Lady comes from her predestination to Divine Motherhood—a gift so extraordinary that it exceeds all merit. That is why, in her deep humility, full of gratitude and restitution, she exclaimed: “The Almighty has done great things for me” (Lk 1:49). And Saint Augustine asks: “What great things has He done in you? I believe that, being a creature, you gave birth to the Creator, and being a servant, you bore the Lord, so that through you God might redeem the world, and through you return life to it.”
What glorification did the Mother of God receive on the day of her bodily and spiritual ascent into Heaven? It is not hard to imagine it as the greatest celebration ever held there—second only to the resounding splendour of Our Lord Jesus Christ’s Ascension. Received by the entire heavenly court, she went to take her place beside the throne of her Divine Son.
Dr. Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira comments that, at that moment, all the glorious perfections of the Blessed Virgin Mary shone uniquely: her boundless kindness, her gentleness, her sovereignty, her attractiveness, her virginal firmness; everything manifested itself in a radiant manner, astonishing angels and saints alike. Above all, two sublime features of Our Lady’s greatness shone most: her superiority and her compassion. Yes, due to her Divine Motherhood and Universal Mediation, she is the intercessor through whom God’s mercy “extends from generation to generation to those who fear Him” (Lk 1:50).
With enthusiastic prophecy, St. Louis de Montfort proclaims that the salvation of the world began through the Blessed Virgin and therefore must also be completed through her: “Mary must shine forth more than ever in mercy, in power, and in grace in the latter times. In mercy, to bring back and lovingly receive poor sinners and wandering souls who will convert and return to the Catholic Church. In power, against the enemies of God […] who will rise up terribly to seduce and make fall, by promises and threats, all who oppose them. Finally, she must shine in grace, to encourage and sustain the valiant soldiers and faithful servants of Jesus Christ who will battle for His cause.”
Assumed into Heaven, the Queen prophesied in the Book of Revelation stands at her Son’s right: “A woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars” (12:1), triumphing over the “great red dragon” (12:3). And this battle gives her even greater splendor, as Dr. Plinio affirms: “Our Lady has crushed and will forever crush the head of the accursed serpent. By doing so, she adds to her extraordinary and singular prerogatives the glory of combat.”
