Vatican Issues First Stamp Series of Pope Leo XIV

In addition to the series featuring four different images of the Holy Father, a special postmark has also been created to commemorate the beginning of Leo XIV’s Pontificate.

Vatican City (May 26, 2025, 4:53 PM, Gaudium Press) – The Vatican Postal and Philatelic Service has announced a new commemorative stamp issue dedicated to the beginning of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate. The series is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, May 27, along with a special postmark depicting Leo XIV greeting the faithful after the Regina Caeli on May 11.

Series Featuring Four Different Images

This philatelic release includes the four denominations currently in use by the Vatican City State: €1.25, €1.30, €2.45, and €3.20.

  • The €1.25 stamp shows the Pope greeting the faithful from the Loggia of Blessings after his election.

  • The €2.45 stamp represents the conclusion of his first greeting to the faithful and the world.

  • The €1.30 and €3.20 stamps depict two moments from the Missa Pro Ecclesia (Mass for the Church), celebrated on May 9 in the Sistine Chapel.

Scheduled Philatelic Releases

Other stamp releases are scheduled for this date, including:

  • The 500th anniversary of the birth of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina,

  • The 50th anniversary of the canonization of Saint Vicenta Maria,

  • The 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea,

  • A series dedicated to the Witnesses of Hope, featuring Saint Mary of Jesus Crucified Baouardy,

  • And, for the Europa Series, stamps dedicated to national archaeological discoveries.

Special ‘Die Emissionis’ Postmark

In keeping with tradition, on May 27 and 28, a postal official will be present at the Vatican Post Office in St. Peter’s Square to apply the special “die emissionis” postmark. The Postal and Philatelic Service reminds collectors that these editions will soon be available in the official online store, which can be accessed at: www.cfn.va. (EPC)
