The Church will beatify 127 religious people martyred by communists in Spain.

The martyrs to be beatified are sixty-eight priests, five seminarians, four brothers, and thirty-nine laypeople. The communists killed them during the civil war of 1936

Newsdesk (June 5, 2021, 21:52, Gaudium Press) The Vatican State Secretariat has communicated Bishop Demetrio Fernandez the date on which the beatification of Father Juan Elias Medina and his confreres of Cordoba will take place. The communists killed them during the religious persecution in Spain’s civil war that took place between 1936 and 1939.

According to the calendar of the Holy See, it will take place in the Church of the Holy See in Cordoba on October 16. Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, prefect of the Congregation, will attend.

In the ordinary session of cardinals and bishops of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, they approved the declaration of the “martyrdom of the Servant of God Juan Elías Medina and 126 other fellow martyrs” on November 17, 2020. It was exactly ten years after the opening of the cause of canonization of these martyrs of the Diocese of Cordoba. The then Bishop of Cordoba, Monsignor Juan José Asenjo, celebrated the ceremony on January 16, 2010.

On that same day, the diocesan investigations about the alleged martyrdom of these Cordobans began. (JSG)
