Pope Leo XIV urges renewed hope in Christ’s Incarnation and solidarity with humanity as the Jubilee of Hope nears its conclusion.

Newsroom (04/01/2026 Gaudium Press )  Addressing pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Angelus on the Second Sunday of Christmas, Pope Leo XIV renewed his Christmas greetings and urged the faithful to anchor their hope in God’s Incarnation rather than in worldly optimism.

With the closing of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica set for Jan. 6, marking the end of the Jubilee of Hope, the Pope reminded Catholics that “Christian hope is not based on optimistic forecasts or human calculations, but on God’s decision to share our journey.” He emphasized that Christ’s coming in the “weakness of human flesh” both rekindles hope and calls believers to a dual commitment: to deepen their relationship with God and to show love for all people.

The Holy Father invited the faithful to see God not as a distant figure but as one who “inhabits our fragile earth” and is revealed in daily life and human relationships. He underscored that every person reflects the divine image, urging concrete action toward fraternity, justice, and peace. “There is no authentic worship of God without care for humanity,” he said.

Following the Angelus prayer, Pope Leo XIV expressed sorrow for the victims of the Crans-Montana tragedy in Switzerland, offering prayers for the young people who died and for their families. He also voiced concern over the situation in Venezuela, calling for an end to violence and for national unity founded on justice, peace, and respect for human rights.

The Pope extended greetings to numerous pilgrim groups from across Europe, including delegations from Slovakia, Malta, and France, among others. Concluding his address, he urged continued faith in “the God of peace” and solidarity with those suffering from war. “Let us pray and show solidarity with the peoples who suffer because of wars. I wish you all a happy Sunday,” he said.
