The Pope emphasized that the Carmelites communal life of prayer is the essential foundation for their service

Newsroom (11/09/2025, Gaudium Press ) Pope Leo XIV has urged the Carmelites to serve as a powerful witness to Christian unity through a life of contemplative prayer and fraternal charity, particularly in societies damaged by division and polarization.

The Pope’s message came in a letter sent to the Order’s Prior General, Fr. Míċeál O’Neill, to mark the opening of the Carmelites’ General Chapter in Indonesia on September 9. The assembly, which will run through September 26, brings together members of the ancient mendicant order for a period of discernment and governance.

In his letter, the Pontiff extended his prayers and best wishes to all participants, encouraging them to use the chapter as a time of profound spiritual renewal. He highlighted the meeting’s theme—“Our contemplative fraternity discerns its mission”—as a reflection of the Order’s core charism.

The Pope emphasized that the Carmelites communal life of prayer is the essential foundation for their service. He pointed to their constitution, urging them to remain rooted in silent prayer and mutual care, which he said would allow them to “discern the signs of the times, especially through the lens of the poor.”

Building on the Carmelite Rule’s instruction for members to “do some work,” Pope Leo called on the order to actively “embody the loving gaze of Christ, who embraces each person with mercy and tenderness” in their daily ministries. These works, which include education, spiritual direction, and parish missions, are a vital extension of their contemplative life.

He specifically prayed that the bond of charity within their communities would become a visible sign of unity, offering an example to a wounded world.

Concluding his message, the Pope entrusted the proceedings to the Virgin of Mount Carmel, the Order’s patroness, asking for her protection and for the gift of peace. He imparted his Apostolic Blessing upon all members of the Carmelite family.
