Pope approves image of Our Lady of Fatima in the Philippines

Manila – Philippines (17/11/2024 12:00, Gaudium Press) Pope Francis, through the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, has approved the request for the pontifical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Fatima of Binakayan, revered in the Diocese of Imus, south of Manila, Philippines.
The announcement was made by local Bishop Reynaldo Evangelista, who expressed his hope that, through this canonical coronation, “devotion to the beloved Virgin of Fatima will continue to spread. May we attract more people to this devotion and bring them closer to God in a life of holiness”.

Spiritual landmark and source of inspiration for future generations

According to Father Julius De Sagun, Rector of the Shrine and parish priest, preparations for the pontifical coronation, tentatively scheduled for mid-2025, are well underway. It is hoped that this highly anticipated event will be a landmark celebration for Catholics in Cavite and throughout the country, reflecting the region’s rich tradition of Marian devotion. This recognition by the Pope is seen as a tribute to the Filipinos’ faith and their Marian devotion.

“This papal approval not only honors Our Lady of Fatima’s role as a powerful intercessor, but also amplifies her message of repentance and conversion to Christ, a message that has resonated globally since her apparitions. The coronation will be a spiritual milestone for the faithful and a lasting source of inspiration for future generations,” said Father De Sagun.

Third Marian image in the diocese to receive canonical coronation

This will be the third Marian image in the diocese to receive canonical coronation. The other two are Our Lady of Pilar, the patron saint of the diocese, and Our Lady of Solitude of Porta Vaga, who is enshrined in her diocesan shrine in Cavite City.
Originally from Portugal, the image has become an icon of hope since the establishment of the parish in Binakayan. The faithful have reported countless miracles and graces obtained through her intercession. In 2009, the image received a crown from the Shrine of Fatima in Portugal, which was used for her episcopal coronation, officiated by the then Bishop of Imus, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle. (EPC)
