St. Anthony Mary Gianelli founded a small missionary congregation of priests to improve the apostolate of preaching to the people and the organization of the clergy.
Newsdesk (June 7, 2021, 12:02, https://gaudiumpress.ca/) On June 7, the Catholic Church celebrates the memory of St. Anthony Mary Gianelli. Born in the Italian city of Cereta on April 12, 1789, he entered the Seminary of Genoa when he was still young and was ordained a priest when he was 23 years old.
In 1827 he founded a small missionary congregation of priests. The mission was to improve the apostolate of preaching to the people and the organization of the clergy. Sometime later, he created a women’s congregation for the free education of poor girls. From this tiny seed emerged the “Daughters of Mary Most Holy of the Garden,” a religious order founded in 1829.
He became bishop in 1838 and carried out a reorganization of his diocese, punishing unzealous priests and even expelling the unworthy. St. Anthony Mary Gianelli died on June 7, 1846, leaving a written document on the morality of the clergy in living a simple and virtuous life of work in the following of Christ.
