Carlos Alberto Gutiérrez, a Mexican priest from Sonora, elected as new director general of the Legionaries of Christ to lead renewal efforts until 2032.
Newsroom (04/02/2026 Gaudium Press ) The General Chapter of the Legionaries of Christ has elected Mexican priest Father Carlos Alberto Gutiérrez as the new director general of the congregation, entrusting him with the mission of continuing its long path of renewal until 2032. The decision, made during the Chapter’s meeting in Rome that began on January 20, marks the beginning of a new leadership phase following the tenure of Fr. John Connor, LC, of American origin.
Born 51 years ago in Hermosillo, Sonora, Father Gutiérrez joined the Legionaries of Christ in 1999 and was ordained in 2009. Over the years, his ministry has spanned several countries including Chile, Italy, Colombia, Venezuela, and Mexico—where he most recently served as territorial director for the Northern Zone.
With a solid academic foundation bridging faith and science, Fr. Gutiérrez holds a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Theology from the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome. Before his priestly studies, he graduated as an industrial and systems engineer from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and later earned a Master’s degree in Psychology from Divine Mercy University in the United States.
A Leader Formed Through Global Ministry
Fr. Gutiérrez’s pastoral journey has been marked by roles that connect diverse communities across the Americas. He began as an assistant in youth ministry for Regnum Christi’s ECYD (Encounters, Convictions, and Decisions) program in Santiago, Chile, for three years. His subsequent missions included serving as assistant to the general secretary, assistant to the territorial director for the apostolate in Colombia-Venezuela between 2009 and 2012, superior of the Bogotá community, and territorial councilor in Venezuela.
Returning to Mexico, he directed ECYD in Monterrey from 2014 to 2015 and later coordinated family and youth pastoral care at the general level. From 2018 to 2022, he served as territorial director for Colombia-Venezuela before assuming leadership of the Northern Zone of Mexico.
Continuing Renewal and Transparency
In its official statement, the Legionaries of Christ said the General Chapter tasked Fr. Gutiérrez with “continuing the path of renewal undertaken by the Congregation for years under the guidance of the Church and promoting the service of evangelization to all people.” The document emphasized the congregation’s ongoing pursuit of “an institutional culture of transparency, care, and service to all people, and communion in the Church.”
The General Chapter, composed of 60 priests representing 13 countries, will continue its proceedings in Rome over the coming days. The body will choose general councilors and a general administrator and engage in “reflection on various aspects of the life and mission of the Legion of Christ.”
Part of a Broader Spiritual Family
Founded in 1941, the Legion of Christ is a Catholic religious congregation of pontifical right. Today it includes two bishops, 1,033 priests, and 273 religious and novices worldwide. It is part of the wider Regnum Christi Federation, a spiritual family that also includes consecrated lay people, consecrated women, and lay members who share a common mission and charism.
In the aftermath of grave scandals linked to the congregation’s founder, Marcial Maciel, the Legionaries and Regnum Christi underwent profound internal reform. The Vatican-approved statutes of the Regnum Christi Federation, finalized in February 2025, define it as a “spiritual family and apostolic body” with four vocations united in faith and service.
Current General Assemblies and Papal Encouragement
The election of Fr. Gutiérrez coincides with the General Assembly of the Consecrated Women of Regnum Christi in Rome, where Nancy Nohrden was re-elected as general director. Simultaneously, the General Assembly of the Consecrated Lay People is underway and is set to elect its new leader in the coming days.
On January 28, Pope Leo XIV received the participants of these assemblies in a private audience, urging them to deepen their understanding of their identity. The Pope expressed confidence that clarity of vocation will enable them to proclaim the Gospel more effectively and with renewed credibility.
Father Carlos Alberto Gutiérrez now steps into his new role at a pivotal moment for the Legionaries of Christ. His leadership will be defined by the delicate balance between continuity and innovation—sustaining the congregation’s spiritual renewal while guiding its members toward a more transparent, service-oriented mission aligned with the broader vision of Regnum Christi and the universal Church.
