Newsroom, June 10, 2025, Gaudium Press – Saint Landericus, one of the saints venerated by the Church today, was the Bishop of Paris during the reign of King Clovis II. He became bishop of the City of Light in the year 650. Previously, he had served as an official in the royal chancery.

His pure charity led him to love the poor deeply. During times of calamity, he sold possessions to distribute them among the needy. He even went so far as to pawn or sell sacred vessels in order to provide for the poor.

Without the contributions of Saint Landericus, the poor would have suffered much more, as there was no properly organized assistance system in place at the time.

Saint Landericus founded the first hospital in Paris, near Notre-Dame, and dedicated it to Saint Christopher. The institution grew in size and reputation, eventually becoming a model for similar institutions throughout the world. The hospital later became known as the Hôtel-Dieu, or “House of God.”

He also exempted the Abbey of Saint-Denis—famous for being the burial place of many French kings—from episcopal jurisdiction. King Clovis II had granted privileges to the abbey, and the holy bishop confirmed them, demonstrating that genuine spiritual autonomy outweighs worldly power.

The exact date of his death is uncertain, though it is believed to have been around the year 657, with some sources suggesting it could have occurred later, in 661.

He was buried at the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, where much of his remains are still preserved.
