Newsroom (08/09/2021 9:00pm, Gaudium Press) During a Holy Mass celebrated in the Heroes’ Square of Budapest, Hungary, on the occasion of the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress, about 1,200 children received their first communion.

A sign of hope

The act is seen as a sign of hope for a nation in which the Church is still recovering from the decades it lived under the communist regime, during which Christian education for children was discouraged and even banned.

This 52nd International Eucharistic Congress, which will conclude with a celebration presided over by Pope Francis next Sunday, is described by the organizers as “a celebration of the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.”

Pope’s participation

Among the 25 Cardinals and Bishops attending the Congress, several are from troubled nations in the Middle East and Africa, where many Christians have been killed for their Faith. They are looking forward to the presence of Pope Francis at the event.

The Holy Father has been invited to visit the country by the President of Hungary, Janos Ader, who is also a Catholic. The ruler of this nation will even give his testimony during the Congress, not only as president of the republic, but also as a father and husband. (EPC)
