Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin reflects on the urgent need for peace in a world increasingly fractured by conflict

Newsroom (29/09/2025, Gaudium Press ) In a special issue of Polizia Moderna, the monthly magazine of the Italian State Police dedicated to “Peace and Security,” Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin reflects on the urgent need for peace in a world increasingly fractured by conflict. Published on the feast of St. Michael the Archangel, the issue highlights the vital role of security forces during recent major Vatican events, underscoring their commitment to fostering safety and order.

“Peace” was the first word spoken by Pope Leo XIV to the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square upon his election. It is a word that resonates deeply, a universal cry from the hearts of men and women, and a desperate plea from peoples afflicted by the senseless proliferation of wars in our time. “Peace is like oxygen,” Cardinal Parolin writes, “taken for granted when present, yet its absence is keenly felt.” In an era where peace is increasingly scarce, Pope Leo has made it the cornerstone of his ministry, describing it as “disarmed and disarming, humble and persevering” (Urbi et Orbi Message, May 8, 2025).

This vision of peace, Parolin explains, is not forceful but invitational, appealing to the goodwill of all. It begins in the heart, uprooting pride and vengeance, and calls for measured language, as “words, like weapons, can wound and kill” (Pope Leo XIV, Address to the Diplomatic Corps, May 16, 2025). Peace, the Pope emphasizes, is a collective responsibility that transcends cultural and religious boundaries, urging individuals and societies to build it through personal relationships, community engagement, and international cooperation.

The Holy See’s mission within the global community reflects this commitment, striving to bridge divides between individuals, nations, and cultures, often through mediation in conflicts. Multilateral diplomacy, born from the ashes of 20th-century world wars, was designed to foster dialogue, security, and cooperation among states. Yet, Parolin laments, the weakening of multilateralism in recent years has hindered efforts to resolve global tensions. Despite these challenges, the Holy See remains steadfast in supporting all who work for peace.

Among these peacemakers are the men and women of the Italian State Police, whose dedication and service Parolin praises. He extends particular gratitude to the Vatican’s Public Security Inspectorate for their extensive efforts during the Sede Vacante and the election of Pope Leo XIV, as well as their ongoing work to ensure the safety of pilgrims and the smooth execution of Jubilee celebrations.

Cardinal Parolin concludes with a heartfelt wish for all members of the Italian State Police and law enforcement: that their generous service may continue to nurture a culture of peace, laying the foundation for a hopeful future for Italy and the world.
