Brazil’s CNBB Accepts Friar Evaldo Xavier Gomes Resignation After Scandal

The Carmelite had already resigned as pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, in Belo Horizonte (MG).

Newsroom (07/12/2021 1:36 PM, Gaudium Press) After having his name involved in a scandal last week, Friar Evaldo Xavier Gomes, O. Carm. has resigned of his duties.

The National Conference of Brazilian Bishops (CNBB) presidency has released a statement accepting Friar Evaldo’s resignation from the several positions he held as a Canon Law consultant.

According to the CNBB note, Fr Evaldo’s vacant canonical consultancies will be assumed in an interim way, by the following clerics: Most Rev. Moacir Silva (Coord.), archbishop of Ribeirão Preto (President of the commission); Most Rev. José Aparecido Gonçalves de Almeida, auxiliary bishop of Brasilia; Father Alberto Monte Alegre (from the archdiocesan clergy of Salvador); Father Ewerton Fernandes Moraes, (from the archdiocesan clergy of S. Paulo); Father Tarcísio Monte Alegre (from the archdiocesan clergy of S. Paulo); Father Ewerton Fernandes Moraes, (from the archdiocesan clergy of S. Paulo). Tarcísio Pedro Vieira, (from the archdiocesan clergy of Florianópolis); and Father Valdir Manoel dos Santos (Dehonian priest, serving in Recife).

On Friday, the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte, in agreement with the Carmelite Order, accepted Fr Evaldo’s resignation as pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Belo Horizonte is the capital city of Minas Gerais State. (EPC)
