The Archdiocese expects a total of 966 catechumens and 172 candidates to be received into full communion with the Church this Easter.
Singapore (17/04/2025 13:30, Gaudium Press) The Archdiocese of Singapore has released a report on its website in which it presents positive figures for Easter this year. According to the document, 842 catechumens and 165 candidates took part in the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion, a ceremony that recognizes readiness for Baptism.
Ceremonies presided over by Cardinal William Goh
During this event, as a guarantee of fidelity, the catechumens inscribe their names in a book that lists those chosen for initiation at Easter. The ceremonies were presided over by Cardinal William Goh, who was accompanied at the altar by priests from all over the Archdiocese representing each of the parishes.
On this occasion, the Cardinal exhorted the catechumens (people who have not yet been baptized and are preparing to receive the sacraments of Christian initiation) to make ‘the Creed of the Catholic Church, the set of beliefs by which the community lives, their personal conviction’.
Singapore has a population of 395,000 Catholics
This ceremony is held during Lent as a way of preparing the catechumens to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. During this Holy Mass, the catechumens will be received into full communion with the Catholic Church.
A second ceremony, another Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion, was held with a further 124 catechumens and 7 candidates at the Church of the Holy Cross. The Archdiocese expects a total of 966 catechumens and 172 candidates to be received into full communion with the Church this Easter. Singapore has 395,000 Catholics out of a population of 5.9 million. (EPC)
