Anti-European Bias in the Vatican?

The existence of an anti-European bias at the highest level of the Vatican is reported by Italy’s largest magazine, Panorama.

Newsroom (15/02/2023 09:02, Gaudium PressIs the idea of ‘anti-European prejudice’ that Cardinal Gerhard Müller talked about in his book ‘In buona Fede’ gaining traction?

Let’s remember:

In his most recent work – in which the German cardinal close to Ratzinger talks to Franca Giansoldati about internal Church issues and perspectives for the 21st century – Müller talks about a ‘magic circle’ around the reigning Pope, and then refers to the Archbishop Emeritus of Tegucipalpa, Cardinal Rodríguez Maradiaga, who stated “publicly that the Prefect of the Congregation of the Faith [Müller] was the classical German professor incapable of interpreting the true reality of the people. Also in this context, one can glimpse the usual Latin American prejudice against European theologians”.

Moreover, in his work, the cardinal of Mainz refers specifically to a “form of distrust” of Francis, “an aversion to theologians, German university academics,” perhaps related to his time spent in Germany as a young religious. Also, for Cardinal Müller, this “Latin American prejudice” would have manifested itself in the drafting of the “constitution Praedicate Evangelium [which] was born with a factory defect, an initial prejudice, and which made its way during the conclave that elected Pope Francis: I am referring to the anti-Roman sentiment and the avoidance of Rome.

“From the beginning, the Latin American cardinals insisted on this aspect,” emphasizes Cardinal Müller in In buona Fede, “and planned to build a Church in their image, in some respects even a little ‘partisan,’ based on their vision of the world.

Already the magazine with the largest circulation in Italy, Panorama, in its new issue, echoes again on the subject, saying that after the departure of Cardinal Müller from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith,

“The whirlwind of resignations and accusations that Francis has been fueling in recent years has begun. He expelled Fr. Georg [Ganswein], now also evicted from the Mater Ecclesiae monastery where he lived with Ratzinger; he expelled Cardinal George Pell (at his funeral in Australia in these last days, victims of abuse held demonstrations), he handed over to the pillory the accusations of pedophilia of which the cardinal was acquitted but ended up in prison; according to Müller, he accused Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu for a newspaper article and condemned him even before the trial. Today many say that it served to get rid of a possible candidate who has the great defect of being Italian and therefore European.

Of course, these assessments are only the personal opinions of Carlo Cambi of Panorama, but they are nevertheless a sample, reflected in the main magazine of the country where the Pope is chosen, of how Europeans may be feeling discriminated against in the current Vatican regime.

Journalist Cambi does not take on Pope Francis’ words upon his return from Sudan about a full understanding between him and Benedict, but instead speaks of “the attack Francis has brought on Ratzinger’s theological foundations,” he indicates:

“That his Church is on its way to the south of the world, toward China, and his eternal conclave eradicates Catholicism from Europe. Ratzinger recalls that it was Paul, taken from Asia Minor to Greece, who brought the Word that united faith and reason; and he underlines how the humanism born of Christ who became man is the true spirit of Europe. A Europe characterized by ‘the richness of being national and supranational: it is the diversity of national cultures that enriches Europe. Beyond all borders, Rome has presented itself above all as a unifying center.” But Francis doesn’t believe it. There are statistics that say that Europe is 21.2% Catholic: the vast majority of Catholics are in America (48% with 28% in Latin America) and Africa is growing (18.9 of the total) and Asia (11%). And there you see Bergoglio, who also understood something else: the Old Continent is destined for ethnic replacement.”

Again, these are the personal assessments of the Panorama journalist. But now they are beginning to be shared by not a few, with possible repercussions at various levels. (SCM)
